The Department of Justice, HKSAR Government

Highlight:

In collaboration with the Department of Justice, HKMS showcased the Elder Mediation Seminar "Conflict to Care: The Role of Mediation in Elder Disputes" during Mediation Week 2026. With Hong Kong's elderly population now exceeding one fifth of residents and projected to rise further, the seminar addressed pressing challenges such as intergenerational tensions, caregiving burdens, and succession planning. Over 50 participants joined to explore how elder mediation provides a private, trusting, and collaborative environment for resolving disputes — an approach aligned with the Government's commitment to building an elderly friendly society.
Key Takeaways:

  • Elder mediation offers a compassionate and supportive alternative to litigation, preserving family bonds while resolving disputes.

  • Effective communication techniques such as paraphrasing and open minded dialogue foster understanding between generations.

  • Mediation reduces stress in caregiving arrangements and empowers elders to participate actively in decision making.

  • Transparency and impartiality strengthen trust, helping families balance autonomy, safety, and care.

  • By addressing conflicts related to finances, succession, and caregiving, mediation creates pathways from conflict to care.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for their engagement and contributions. Their enthusiasm underscored the urgency of addressing elder related disputes in Hong Kong's ageing society.
We also express our deep gratitude to our Co Directors of Elder Mediation Development, Ms. Winnie Chan and Ms. Elizabeth Chan, for their leadership and dedication. Their vision and commitment continue to strengthen HKMS's role in advancing elder mediation as a compassionate, people centred approach.
